Introducing Ark Design Build
With more than two decades of combined design and build experience, Ark Design Build specialises in creating tailored garden studios that balance style, practicality, and durability. Founded by two lifelong friends, the Tunbridge Wells-based team focuses on projects across Kent, East Sussex, Surrey, and South London, ensuring each receives the attention it deserves.
Studios are constructed entirely on-site using a robust, multi-layer insulated timber frame structure. This approach avoids prefabricated kits, allowing complete flexibility and on-the-spot adjustments to suit the garden and the way you like to work. Explore the gallery below and you will see how each studio is designed around the client’s choices — from light-filled compact pods to large, multi-room layouts.
Ark Design Build offers both sleek mono-pitched studios and dual-pitched rooflines with vaulted ceilings. Taller designs exceeding 2.5m can be created where greater working height is needed for large canvases, specialist equipment, or displaying work. They can also incorporate features such as built-in storage, sinks for cleaning brushes, kitchens, cloakrooms, or full shower rooms, while managing all associated groundwork, utilities, and certification.

ROOFLINES
Ark Design Build offers both mono-pitched and dual-pitched rooflines. Mono-pitched designs create a clean, modern profile, while dual-pitched rooflines add height and volume inside, creating a spacious, contemporary feel. Taller designs above 2.5m can be created for specialist creative needs, with planning approval managed as part of the turnkey service.
APPROVAL PROCESS
Studios are designed with Permitted Development rules in mind but Ark Design Build is equally experienced in projects requiring full planning approval. As part of their turnkey service, they prepare and submit applications, and when a studio’s size, use, or specification requires Building Regulations approval, they coordinate the process and secure sign-off.
SERVICE
The turnkey service covers everything from initial design through to final electrical and plumbing connections. All foundations, services, and finishes are included in the quoted price to avoid hidden costs. A hard-wired internet connection is provided as standard, ensuring reliable connectivity.
STRUCTURE
Constructed on-site, each studio features a high-spec multi-layer insulated timber frame system for durability, comfort, and energy efficiency. Electrical installations include Cat 6 data cabling, with optional acoustic enhancements for noise-sensitive work.
SITE CHALLENGES
Ark Design Build has experience overcoming sloping ground, adapting designs for irregular-shaped plots, and working sensitively around existing trees to ensure the studio sits comfortably within its surroundings.
